l’Université de Moncton professor recognized globally for AI research

From the Springboard Content Lab

The Springboard Network congratulates a researcher from our member l’Université de Moncton on receiving international recognition in artificial intelligence.

Computer science professor Moulay Akhloufi, has appeared on the Stanford University’s top two percent list of the world’s most influential scientists for 2025. He is also ranked nineth globally for his work in deep learning scholarship analytics tracking platform ScolarGPS.

Deep learning is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on teaching computers to learn patterns from large amounts of data using structures inspired by the human brain.

“It’s the kind of reward and recognition that you like to see because it’s recognition of the work you are doing and the impact of your work in the field. After the pandemic obviously a lot of people were looking to AI as a solution to help the health care system.

Prof. Akhloufi’s conducts AI research in health care, using it to saves lives with accurate detection of cancers. His research is also using AI is to help hospitals with patient flow and discharge planning.

AI used to detect wildfires

UdeM AI research teams are also collaborating with universities in Ontario, Alberta, B.C. and Quebec and governments on a national project using AI to detect wildfires through ground cameras, aerial drone photos and satellites. They are also using meteorological data with AI to make fire predictions.

Despite the criticism of AI in the wider culture, Prof. Akhloufi said there are many positives coming from AI research, especially in the healthcare field. However as AI continues to advance, more research will be necessary to address the threats.

“Doing research for research is OK, but you don’t see your impact or your solutions working. When they work, when you make solutions that can help people that is the best you can expect.”
