Learn about the importance of IP during this Intellectual Property 101 session on Wednesday, May 7, 12 pm-1 pm. The event is presented by Springboard IP Advantage and VOLTA.

During this session, IP Advantage Counsellor Shelley Hessian will explain the various forms of IP, highlight the pros and cons of each, and give tips on how to develop an IP strategy to protect your business ideas.

This event is hybrid. The in-person presentation will be held at the VOLTA office Address: 801 – 1800 Argyle Street Halifax, NS B3J 3N8.

Attendees are required to register for both in-person (Halifax) and virtual (pan-Atlantic). The event is free of charge, and in-person attendees will be offered lunch.

Shelley brings more than 30 years of experience working with small and medium-sized businesses in the Atlantic Canadian ecosystem. She helps deliver Springboard Atlantic IP Advantage which is an ISED intellectual property (IP) program for startups.

Prior to joining Springboard Atlantic, Shelley worked at Invest Nova Scotia (formerly Innovacorp) for 15 years. Her last position there was as manager, Start-Up Yard at COVE. Start-Up Yard is the business incubator located at the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship.

Shelley is a strong supporter of the startup ecosystem in the region. She has a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA from Saint Mary’s University.

Springboard IP Advantage provides IP support to startups

Springboard IP Advantage helps Business Accelerators and Incubators (BAIs) provide the tools Canadian startups need to understand, strategically manage and leverage their IP. This includes:

  • Facilitating IP supports by BAIs to startups in Canada;
  • Increasing IP capacity in the BAI ecosystem in Canada through IP education for BAIs and their client startups; and
  • Enabling BAIs to provide targeted supports that are customized to the unique requirements of each startup to help them secure and maintain IP rights.

Springboard Atlantic is a network of 19 post-secondary institutions in Atlantic Canada working to commercialize academic and industry-led research. Springboard IP Advantage delivers IP funding and support to startups in Atlantic Canada. It is an Elevate IP program funded by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada ( ISED )
