Federal government announces $8.5M for 40 AI projects in Atlantic Canada

The federal government has announced an $8.5 million investment to help 40 Atlantic Canadian businesses, universities and organizations adopt artificial intelligence to improve productivity. Two Springboard Network members will be funded more than $2 million for three projects.

The funding was announced by Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, during a visit to Volta in Halifax. The funding is delivered through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and will support:

  • small businesses reach more customers using AI-powered sales tools;
  • rural industries improve productivity through smart automation;
  • companies scale up AI systems for export and certification; and
  • workers gain digital skills through training and support.

ACOA to deliver $15.7M under the $200M federal initiative

The Government of Canada is investing $200 million over five years to the national AI initiative which will be delivered by regional development agencies such as ACOA. The goal is to support AI adoption in areas such as agriculture, health care, clean technology and manufacturing.

In Atlantic Canada, ACOA is delivering $15.7 million under the initiative.

These investments are creating new opportunities, increasing productivity, and helping Atlantic Canadian communities grow. As the economic and productivity benefits of new technologies continue to unfold, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting the nation’s AI ecosystem with targeted investments to help small and medium-sized enterprises incorporate AI into their business operations.
