CNA’s Applied Research Projects Featured In National Publication
College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Office of Applied Research (OAR) has been featured in a national publication recently issued by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). The publication is titled, Colleges, Institutes & Polytechnics: Applied Research for Economic and Social Development.
The OAR leads the college’s research and innovation network. Through the application and commercialization of new knowledge, as well as by way of technology transfer, the OAR supports and leads pan-provincial college research in response to industry and community needs.
“The ACCC requested that we provide stories about what types of applied research was happening at College of the North Atlantic and we were more than happy to oblige,” says Mohammad Iqbal, Chair of the college’s OAR. “This is a great publication – it shows how the college has contributed in very significant ways to the field of applied research in this province and we are one of the most prominently featured institutions from Atlantic Canada – we are proud of that recognition.”
CNA projects featured in the publication include studying the impact of the European fire ant on the ecosystem of Newfoundland and Labrador; developing a non-destructive method for testing welded plastics; transforming shipping containers into dormitories for use as student housing, or as disaster relief shelters (among others); examining the surficial geochemical methods for detecting buried mineral deposits; and the development of an integrated tank-based aquaculture system that is environmentally sustainable and economically feasible.
“I’m very impressed with the scope and scale of the projects underway at the college,” says Cyril Organ, the college’s vice-president of Academic and Learner Services. “Promoting the accomplishments of the college’s Office of Applied Research proves the importance of its work. It also serves as a form of verification of the funding and research support we have received through our numerous partners and stakeholders. They get to witness first-hand the benefits associated with the work done by our research teams.”
The publication can be viewed at Colleges, Institutes & Polytechnics: Applied Research for Economic and Social Development. Additional information on College of the North Atlantic’s Office of Applied Research can be found by visiting www.cna.nl.ca.
